How to Make Your Work Go Further as the Entrepreneur in Your Business

We just had a conversation with 4 contractors in our Business Scaler Challenge session in which we helped them improve the outputs from the time they spend on the business. We mainly hear that their time spent working is super unpredictable, they can never plan it out and they get so overwhelmed that they don’t even have time to plan it out. So here is how to fix that.

The number one thing is identifying the high leverage vs low leverage tasks. We want to figure out what tasks make the company more revenue with less or the same amount of time worked. For example, selling 1 short term property manager with 450 properties as a cleaner is higher leverage than selling 1 home owner. The key is to figure out which tasks you do are the highest and lowest leverage. From that point we assign the lowest leverage tasks to employees further down.

Think about your business as a pyramid, as you hire people, you move further up the pyramid. However, you need to make sure that the work you do is higher up the pyramid. So if you have 500 employees, absolutely don’t go clean the house yourself, but if you have none, then you have to go do it. You can determine who to give which tasks based on pay, your highest paid employees get the highest leverage tasks. You as the owner, take the highest.

If you want less work, delegate more tasks but always go from the bottom up. That way any work you do is guaranteed to have the biggest return on time possible. That’s the key if you want free up time as the owner.

Now when we delegate tasks this way we get a few other benefits. The first one is that it’s easier to hire, you’re not hiring a base level painter to do your accounting. Another advantage is that you have an easier time managing, the tasks your lowest leverage employees do, have the least amount of importance, meaning you don’t need to micromanage or stress out too much about how they do them. Finally and going with the previous is that mistakes aren’t as expensive. If your base level painter makes an accounting error, you could go to prison. But if your painter accidentally paints the wrong wall on a house, you’re just lost a bit of paint.

So if you want more impact on the time you spend in your business, focus on only doing the high leverage work. Figure out what work you do makes the most revenue per hour spent.
